Check these first
Before anyone drives to your house, run through these. They are safe, they take about ten minutes, and they clear a meaningful share of no-cooling calls without a service fee. Nothing here requires a tool, a ladder, or a panel cover.
- Thermostat mode and setpoint. Confirm it reads COOL, not HEAT or OFF, and that the setpoint sits below the room temperature. A guest, a child, or a schedule can move it. If the screen is dim or blank, replace the batteries.
- The breaker. Open the panel door (only the door) and look for a handle resting between ON and OFF. Push it fully off, then on, once. If it trips again, stop. A breaker that will not hold is protecting something.
- The filter. Pull it. If you cannot see light through it, replace it. A filter loaded with haboob dust can choke airflow enough to stop cooling outright.
- The outdoor unit. Stand near the condenser, or listen for a rooftop package unit from the yard. You should hear the compressor and feel warm air pushing out the top. Silence while the thermostat is calling is a clue. So is a fan spinning on a unit that is otherwise quiet.
- Ice on the lines. Look at the larger insulated copper line where it enters the house or the air handler. Frost in July means shut cooling off, leave the fan on, and wait for a technician.
- The drain float switch. Many Valley air handlers carry a small safety switch on the condensate drain. When the drain clogs, the switch shuts the system down to prevent a ceiling leak. If water is pooling in the pan or near the unit, that switch may be doing exactly what it was installed to do.
If one of these fixes it, good. Watch it for an hour. If it quits again, the check found a symptom, not the cause.
What it usually means
A system that produces nothing at all is a different animal from one that produces lukewarm air. Total silence points toward power: a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a burned contactor, a blown low-voltage fuse, or that float switch. The equipment may be fine; it simply is not being told to run, or cannot start when told.
An outdoor unit that hums but never spins, or starts and stalls within seconds, is usually a capacitor or a motor on its way out. In 155-degree attic and rooftop conditions, capacitors fail on schedule. July is capacitor season in this trade.
Air moving indoors but warm at the vents means the outdoor half is not doing its share. That could be refrigerant, a dead compressor, or a condenser coil so packed with dust that it cannot reject heat. That branch has its own page:

None of this can be confirmed from a web page. A meter, a set of gauges, and a technician on site can confirm all of it.
Heat safety while you wait
An indoor temperature climbing past 90 degrees is not an inconvenience for an infant, an older adult, a pregnant person, or anyone on certain medications. It is a hazard. If someone in the house fits that description, move them somewhere cool now: a relative's home, a library, a mall, a cooling center. Do not wait to see whether the house "holds." Stop and call if
- The breaker trips a second time. Do not reset it again.
- You smell something burning or electrical, or hear a loud buzz from the outdoor unit.
- Water is dripping from a ceiling or pooling under the air handler.
- Ice has formed on the copper lines or the indoor coil.
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn.
- The system ran fine, quit, and now nothing you touch changes anything.

What to skip
Do not open the outdoor unit's access panel, the air handler cabinet, or the electrical disconnect. Capacitors hold a charge after power is off. Refrigerant lines run under pressure. And no one should be on a tile roof in August to look at a package unit. There is a reason technicians carry harnesses and meters. The safe checks above are the whole homeowner playbook.
