HVAC Air Balancing

One bedroom sits at 82 while the living room holds 72. Same thermostat, same system, same run time. Nine times out of ten that is not an equipment problem. It is a distribution problem, and distribution problems get fixed with air balancing - adjusting how much of the blower's output lands in each room until the rooms agree with each other.

What we actually adjust

Balancing dampers live in the trunk and branch lines, usually up in the attic, and on most Valley homes they have not been touched since the day the house was framed. We open the ones feeding starved rooms and choke back the ones feeding rooms that overshoot. Registers get used for fine tuning, not as the main control, because a half-closed register at the ceiling mostly just makes noise and pushes air back up the branch. Everything gets measured. We take a reading at each supply before and after, write it down, and leave you the sheet.

Phoenix makes this harder than most markets. West-facing glass in a two-story build can carry thousands of BTU an hour more than the identical room on the north side, and it does it at five in the afternoon when the system is already flat out. Attics hit 155 degrees in July, so the branch that crosses forty feet of that attic delivers air noticeably warmer than the one near the air handler. Block-and-stucco walls hold heat well past sundown and shift the load hours later. A layout that felt fine in April is out of balance by July, so we balance for the cooling season, because that is the season that actually hurts here.

When balancing is the wrong money

We will tell you when it is. If the branch to that bedroom is crushed, disconnected, or torn open at the boot, no amount of damper work saves it and you need duct repair instead. If the system cannot pull enough air back to the blower, balancing only moves the shortage around, and the real answer is adding return capacity. If two ends of a large or multi-story home fight each other all day long, dampers alone will never hold them together and zoning is the honest recommendation.
