The ductwork never really got there
The most common culprit is a duct run that is too long, too narrow, crushed, disconnected, or simply never designed for that space. Additions are notorious: someone tapped into an existing trunk line that was already at capacity, and physics did the rest. If the air coming out of that register is weak, you do not have a thermostat problem, you have a delivery problem. First we measure — airflow at the register, temperature split, static pressure. That tells us whether we are chasing a duct problem, a capacity problem, or an envelope problem. From there the fix is usually one of three: repair and balance the ducts, address the heat load, or add dedicated capacity.That last option is where a ductless mini-split earns its keep. It is a small outdoor unit and a quiet indoor head connected by a line no thicker than a garden hose. No demolition, no new duct runs, and the room gets its own thermostat — cool in summer, warm in winter.
