Duct Repair

Most duct failures in Phoenix homes are not mysterious. A boot pulls loose from a ceiling register and dumps cold air into the attic. A flex run gets stepped on by a solar installer and never recovers. A section behind stored Christmas boxes gets crushed to half its diameter. A joint at the trunk line separates because the original builder relied on tape and gravity. You feel the result long before you see the cause: one register that barely puffs, a back bedroom that stays 8 degrees warmer than the thermostat says, dust that returns two days after you clean, and a summer bill that climbed for no reason you can name. A duct dumping conditioned air into a 155-degree attic is the most expensive leak in your house, because you pay to cool the air twice and never get to breathe it.

What we actually check

We start in the attic, not at the equipment. We walk every accessible run, pull back insulation at the boots, and check the connections at the plenum and trunk. We look for crushed sections, sagging bellies full of standing dust, torn outer jackets, and inner liners separated from the collar. Then we measure. Static pressure and register readings tell us whether the problem is one bad run or a system that was never sized right in the first place, which is what our HVAC airflow testing is for. A real repair versus a band-aid

Cloth duct tape does not repair ducts. It never has. The adhesive cooks off in a Phoenix attic in one or two summers, the cloth dries, curls, and drops, and you are back where you started with a hidden leak. A real repair uses mastic and fiberglass mesh tape, mechanical fasteners, and a proper collar connection, then gets re-insulated so the repaired section does not sweat during monsoon humidity. Metal-to-metal joints get screwed and sealed. Flex gets strapped to the collar with a band on the inner liner and a second band on the outer jacket. Done that way, the repair outlives the duct around it.

We will also tell you when repair is the wrong purchase. If the insulation is crumbling in your hands, if a rodent has been living in the trunk, or if the system is past 20 years old, patching three spots buys you a season and wastes your money. That is a duct replacement conversation, and it is often cheaper to do alongside a new AC installation while the equipment is already open. If the runs are sound but leaking at dozens of small seams, whole-system duct sealing is the efficiency fix, not a repair call.
