Flex duct is not a bad product. It is a product that fails fast when it is installed carelessly and then baked at 155 degrees for twenty summers. Arizona attics are the hardest environment flex duct will ever see, and the failure modes are predictable: the outer jacket goes brittle and cracks under UV that leaks through vents and gable ends, the inner liner tears loose from the wire helix, the fiberglass between them settles and thins until an R-4.2 run is delivering closer to R-2, and long unsupported spans sag into deep bellies that trap dust and choke flow. A single sharp kink where a run crosses a truss can cut delivered air to that room by half. Nobody sees it, because it is above the drywall.

How to tell your flex has failed

The symptoms show up as comfort problems, not duct problems. A room that will not hold temperature after 3 p.m. even though the vent is open. Upstairs running hot while downstairs is comfortable, which is worth reading about in why upstairs is always hotter. Registers that whistle or that barely move a strip of paper. Condensation on a register during monsoon humidity, which usually means the insulation on that run is gone. We confirm it with measurements rather than guesses, and HVAC airflow testing tells us which runs are actually starved.

Installed the way flex is supposed to be installed

Most flex failures we see trace back to the original install. Done correctly, flex gets supported every 4 feet with wide saddle straps that do not pinch the wire, pulled taut with no more than a half inch of sag per foot between supports, turned on a generous radius instead of a hard elbow, and connected with a band on the inner liner, mastic at the collar, and a second band over the outer jacket. Runs are kept off the attic floor and away from anything stored up there. We replace with modern R-8 flex, which nearly doubles the insulation value of the R-4.2 that came in most Valley homes built before the mid-2000s, and that difference is real when the air around the duct is hotter than the air inside it.

Flex replacement is not always the answer. If the liner is intact and the run is only losing air at the collar, targeted duct repair handles it for far less. If the insulation is the only weak point on otherwise sound runs, added duct insulation may be the better spend.
