What fails in Phoenix, and why
An air conditioner in Chandler or Glendale does not live the life its designer imagined. What a real diagnosis looks like
A diagnosis is a set of measurements, not a guess with a confident face. When a technician opens your system, you should see instruments come out. Capacitors are tested under load, not eyeballed for a bulge. Voltage and amperage are measured at the compressor and both motors and compared to nameplate ratings. Refrigerant pressures are read with gauges and interpreted against outdoor temperature, then confirmed with
superheat and subcooling calculations, because pressure alone tells you almost nothing on a 110-degree day. Temperature split across the indoor coil is recorded. Static pressure in the ductwork is checked when airflow is in question. A drain line is traced, not assumed. What to expect from a service visit
Expect a conversation before any tools. Where is the thermostat set, when did the problem start, what changed. Expect the technician to look at the whole system, indoor and out, even if the complaint seems obvious, because a failed capacitor is often the result of a weak fan motor, and replacing one without noticing the other buys you a second visit in August. Expect the readings to be written down and shown to you. Expect a flat-rate quote for the repair before any work begins, and a clear answer to the question of what happens if you do nothing. Expect the repair to be tested afterward: system started, amps rechecked, temperature split confirmed, drain flowing. What you should not expect is pressure. When a repair is worth it, and when it is a conversation
Most repairs are worth it. A capacitor on a nine-year-old system, a contactor, a drain clear, a fan motor on a unit that is otherwise sound: fix it and move on. The math shifts when the repair is large, the system is old, and the refrigerant is
R-22, which is no longer produced and is expensive to source. It also shifts when the failed part is the compressor on a system past its twelfth or fifteenth summer, or when this is the third service call in two seasons. That is not a sales moment. What you can safely check before you call
A few things are yours to check. Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and the setpoint is below room temperature. Replace a dirty filter. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once; if it trips again, stop and call, because a breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from something. Look for visible ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines; if you see it, shut the system off so the ice can melt before a technician arrives. Clear leaves, dust and debris from around the outdoor unit, or from around a
rooftop package unit only if you can do it from the ground. That is the end of the list. Panels, capacitors, refrigerant, gas lines and roofs belong to people with meters and insurance.
When to call
Call when the checks above change nothing. Call sooner if you smell something burning, hear a new grinding or buzzing, or see water where it should not be. Call immediately if the house is climbing past 85 degrees with anyone elderly, infant or unwell inside, because a Phoenix house without cooling is a safety problem before it is a comfort problem.
