Nobody wants to hear the word compressor. The good news is that several cheaper parts produce the same symptoms, and two of them fail far more often in Phoenix heat. Give it five minutes before anyone says the word.
Then turn it off at the thermostat. A compressor cycling against a fault does not improve with patience.
Hard starting. The lights dim, the unit shudders, and you hear a low groan before the fan catches, or a hum followed by a click and silence. The compressor is trying to start against pressure it cannot overcome. Breaker trips on startup. A locked rotor draws several times its running current, and the breaker does what breakers do. Humming with no cooling. The fan runs, the unit sounds alive, the air inside stays warm. An outdoor unit hot to stand near. The cabinet radiates more than the afternoon sun accounts for. Look; do not touch the panels or wiring.
Heat is the first cause and the Phoenix-specific one. The condenser is designed to reject heat into outdoor air, and on a 112-degree afternoon the air arriving at a rooftop unit is already hotter than that. Head pressure climbs, amperage climbs, and the compressor runs at the edge of its rating for eight hours a day, every day, for four months. Low charge is second: refrigerant carries the oil, and a system that has been leaking or topped off runs the compressor dry. Electrical is third, and it is a chain. A weak run capacitor makes every start harder. A pitted contactor delivers ragged voltage. A utility sag during a monsoon evening does the rest. Age underwrites all of it.
A hard-start kit is a capacitor and relay that give the compressor a larger push for a fraction of a second. On a compressor that is mechanically tight but electrically sound, it can add real life, and we install them when that is the situation. A compressor is the one component whose replacement approaches the cost of a new outdoor unit, and a new outdoor unit approaches the cost of a matched system. So a failed compressor forces the question every other repair lets you postpone. The factors that decide it: the age of the system, whether it runs R-22, the condition of the indoor coil and ductwork, whether the compressor is still within the manufacturer's parts coverage, and how the rest of the unit has been treated. A ten-year-old split system with a covered compressor and a clean history is often worth the repair. A sixteen-year-old unit that has been topped off twice usually is not. No web page can tell a locked compressor from a failed capacitor, and neither can a homeowner with a flashlight. A technician with a meter can, in the first fifteen minutes on site. Annual maintenance catches the weak capacitor, the low charge, and the dirty coil that are, most years, the actual reason a compressor fails in July.

A hard-starting compressor groans or shudders for a second before the fan catches, or hums, clicks off, and tries again a few minutes later. A compressor with a mechanical failure can knock or rattle. A unit that hums steadily with the fan stopped is more often a capacitor than a compressor. None of these sounds is a diagnosis; a meter is.

Because spring never asked it to work at its limit. When outdoor air hits 110 and the condenser inlet on a rooftop unit is hotter still, head pressure and amp draw reach their annual peak. A compressor already weakened by a marginal capacitor or low charge crosses the line on the first day the heat does.

Yes. Each attempt to start a locked compressor pushes locked-rotor current through the windings and adds heat to insulation that is already stressed. One reset is a reasonable test. A second trip is the system telling you to stop, and continuing can turn a repairable fault into a replacement.
Possibly. Many manufacturers cover the compressor as a part for a set term when the unit was registered, and labor, refrigerant, and other parts are usually separate. Mechanically it is the same component doing the same job, but a heat pump compressor runs in winter as well as summer, so it logs more hours per year. The failure signs and the repair-versus-replace math are the same; the annual runtime is simply higher.
