Ducts are half the system, and the half nobody looks at
A new air conditioner attached to old ducts is a fast car on a dirt road. The ducts in a typical Phoenix tract home run through an attic that reaches 150 degrees by two in the afternoon. They are flex duct, often crushed at the turns, joined with tape that gave up in its second summer, and connected to a return sized for a thinner filter than the one in it now. Field studies of existing homes put typical leakage at 20 to 30 percent of the air the blower moves. In practice that means a quarter of the cooling you pay for is delivered to the insulation. Duct work without measurement is guessing with a caulk gun. An
airflow and static pressure test is where every duct project should start. A technician measures total external static pressure at the air handler, compares it to the blower's rating, and measures airflow at the registers. High static means the ducts are too small or too restrictive, or the filter is choking them. Low airflow at one room with fine airflow elsewhere means a crushed run or a closed damper. A duct leakage test pressurizes the system and measures what escapes. The numbers tell you which service you need, in what order, and whether the equipment itself is part of the problem.
Sealing, cleaning and insulation: three different jobs
Duct sealing closes the gaps: at the plenum connections, the boots behind the registers, the collar joints and the panned return cavities. It is the service that changes the bills and the comfort, because it delivers more of the air you already paid to cool.
Duct cleaning removes what has accumulated inside: construction debris after a remodel, years of dust pulled in through unfiltered return leaks, or the drywall grit from a repair.
Cleaning without sealing is a subscription. The same leaks that let the dust in will let it in again. If a house is dusty, seal first. If a house was just remodeled or the registers show visible debris, clean, then seal so it stays clean.
Insulation in a 150-degree attic
Even a perfectly sealed duct loses cooling through its walls when it runs through an attic hotter than a parked car. Older flex duct and bare sheet metal give up a meaningful share of the cooling between the air handler and the register.
Duct insulation wraps or replaces the runs with higher-rated jacketing. It pairs naturally with
attic insulation, since lowering the attic temperature helps every duct in it. Neither is glamorous. Both show up on the bill.
Return air: the half of the duct system that is usually too small
The supply side pushes. The return side pulls, and it has to pull exactly as much as the supply pushes or the blower strains. Many Valley homes have a single return grille in a hallway, and bedrooms with closed doors become sealed boxes the system cannot pull from. Pressure builds in the room, cooling stalls, and the system draws makeup air from wherever it can, including the attic. A
return air upgrade adds returns, enlarges the existing one, or adds jumper ducts and transfer grilles so closed doors stop fighting the blower. It is often the smallest fix for the largest comfort problem in the house, and the one most likely to be skipped by a quote that only looked at the outdoor unit.
Balancing, zoning and the room that never cools
Once the ducts are sealed and the return can breathe, the air still has to go to the right places.
Air balancing adjusts dampers and register flow so each room gets the share its size and sun exposure require. The west-facing primary bedroom needs more than the north-facing office.
Zoning goes further and gives separate thermostats and motorized dampers to different areas, which suits two-story homes and long single-story layouts with the system at one end. For a single stubborn room, the

Repair, redesign or replace
Some duct systems are worth fixing. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and a torn plenum are
duct repairs, done in an afternoon. Some are not worth fixing: undersized trunks, runs that cross the attic twice, a return that cannot be enlarged without moving a wall. Those call for a redesign, ideally timed with equipment replacement so the new system is sized to the ducts it will actually have. A

What a duct visit looks like, and when to call
We go in the attic, and you do not have to.
