A refrigerant leak does not announce itself. It shows up as a system that works a little worse each week until one afternoon in July it does not work at all. Before you assume the worst, rule out the cheap explanations. None of these require tools, a ladder, or opening anything.
That is the full list. Nothing on it involves gauges, valves, or a can from a hardware store. Refrigerant handling requires federal certification, and the rule exists for good reasons.
Refrigerant is not fuel. A sealed system does not consume it, so a system that is low did not use it up. It leaked. What follows are the four signs we hear about most, roughly in order of how alarming they sound.
A faint hiss at the indoor coil or along the line set, especially with the system off, is gas escaping through a pinhole. A gurgle can mean refrigerant boiling where it should not, at a restriction or a low-charge point. Both are worth mentioning to the technician. Neither is a diagnosis.
Low charge drops the pressure in the evaporator, which drops its temperature below freezing. Moisture in the return air freezes to it in layers. The ice blocks airflow, which makes more ice. A leak is one of two common causes of a frozen coil; the other is airflow, which is why the filter check above matters.
Compressor oil travels with the refrigerant. Where the gas escapes, the oil follows and stays behind. A dark, greasy film at a brazed joint, a service valve cap, or the bottom of the indoor coil pan is the closest thing to a fingerprint a leak leaves.
The quiet sign is the one most people miss. The house still cools in April. By June it cannot hold 78 on a 112-degree afternoon and the system runs past sundown. The bill climbs, because a low system runs longer to move less heat. If your APS or SRP time-of-use bill has drifted up with no change in habits, low charge belongs on the list of suspects.
Most residential leaks show up in one of three places. Indoor evaporator coils develop formicary corrosion, tiny tunnels in the copper caused by ordinary household chemistry. Line-set joints and the Schrader cores at the service valves fail from vibration and years of 155-degree attic cycling. A top-off is a loan against next month. The gas leaves again, the coil freezes again, and the compressor runs short on oil the whole time. On an older R-22 system the top-off is also expensive, because that refrigerant is no longer produced. On a newer R-410A or R-454B system it is simply pointless without a repair. A proper leak repair has four parts: find the leak with electronic detection, nitrogen pressure testing, or dye; repair or replace the failed component; pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture and air; and weigh in the exact factory charge. Skip any one of them and the repair does not hold.
Sometimes the honest answer is that a leaking coil on a fifteen-year-old system is not worth saving. That is not a pitch. It is arithmetic, and we lay it out in the repair-versus-replace guide. If the arithmetic lands on replacement, financing on approved credit is available, and the estimate is written before any work starts.
A web page cannot find a leak or tell you whether the coil is worth saving. A technician with a detector and a set of gauges can, usually on the first visit. Spring maintenance catches slow leaks in March, when they are a line item and not an emergency.

No. Federal law requires certification to purchase and handle refrigerant, and the recharge products sold for cars do not belong in a home system. Adding the wrong gas, or the right gas without fixing the leak, stacks a second problem on the first. Leave the gauges to a technician.
It depends entirely on the leak. Formicary corrosion in an indoor coil can take a full season to show itself; a cracked joint at a service valve can empty a system in a week. Once ice forms, the system compounds the problem on its own. The rate is not something you can judge from inside the house.
Because it ran all summer once. Every top-off sends compressor oil out with the gas, and the compressor is the part you cannot afford to lose. Not automatically. A small, findable leak on an otherwise healthy R-22 system can be repaired, but the refrigerant itself is no longer manufactured and the supply is what it is. Shut the system off, open a window if you hear a hiss indoors, and call. We do not make health claims here; the safety data for the refrigerant in your system is published by its manufacturer. The practical risk we can speak to is mechanical: a compressor running without enough oil does not last.
Indoor coils corrode from the inside out through formicary corrosion, a reaction between copper and common household compounds carried in the air. Attic heat accelerates it. The outdoor unit takes more abuse but is built for it; the indoor coil is thin copper in a 155-degree attic for half the year.

That is largely what a spring tune-up is for. Operating pressures, superheat, subcooling, and the temperature split across the coil all move when charge is low, and they move before the house feels it.
