Why the old system got expensive
Somewhere in the Valley this afternoon a technician is standing beside a condenser from the previous century, gauges on, working out how to say it kindly. The system is low on R-22. The United States stopped producing and importing R-22 at the start of 2020. What remains is reclaimed gas and whatever distributors stockpiled, and scarcity sets the price. Each leak repair on an old system is a purchase of a shrinking product, poured into equipment that predates current efficiency minimums and is asked to survive 112-degree afternoons on an APS or SRP time-of-use plan. The phase-out in plain language
R-22 depletes the ozone layer, and an international agreement scheduled its retirement decades ago. New equipment using it stopped in 2010. Production and import ended in 2020. It remains legal to own an R-22 system, to run it, and to service it with reclaimed refrigerant. Nobody will make you replace it. The market will simply keep raising the cost of not replacing it. One more wrinkle: the refrigerant that replaced R-22 is now being phased down for new equipment in favor of lower-global-warming blends. Alternative blends marketed for R-22 systems exist, and some technicians reach for them. Understand what you are agreeing to.
- They are not truly drop-in. Pressure and temperature behave differently, and capacity in extreme heat is usually lower, which in Phoenix is the whole point.
- Oil compatibility. Older systems use mineral oil; many blends return oil to the compressor less reliably without changes.
- Mixing. Adding a blend to residual R-22 creates a cocktail no gauge can identify, and the next technician has to guess.
- The leak is still there. A blend does not fix the hole. If the system lost charge once, it will lose the new gas the same way.
A blend can be a reasonable bridge for a tight system with one honest season left before a planned replacement. It is a poor answer for a leaking one. Our

What changes the scope
An R-22 swap is a whole-system project, not a condenser swap.
- Indoor coil. An R-22 evaporator coil cannot run on current refrigerants. The coil, and usually the air handler or furnace it sits on, is part of the job.
- Line set. Old copper carries mineral oil residue and may not be rated for the higher pressures of newer refrigerants. Replacement or a proper flush is decided on site, and the route through a wall or attic drives labor.
- Electrical. The new condenser's nameplate sets breaker and wire requirements, and older panels do not always cooperate.
- Home type. A rooftop package unit has no line set but needs a crane and a curb match. A split system in a two-story tract home may need attic work in a 155-degree space.
- Ducts and sizing. A new system on leaking ducts or the old tonnage repeats the old mistakes. A load calculation and duct assessment belong in every bid.
- Recovery. The old refrigerant must be recovered by certified technicians, never vented. It is the law, and it is the right thing.
Planning before the summer failure
A decision made in October is calmer than one made at four in the afternoon in July with the house at 90 degrees inside. Have the system evaluated while it still runs. Get the load calculation done. Sort out
financing on approved credit so the paperwork is not part of the emergency. Then schedule the install for a shoulder month when crews are not triaging. Honesty demands the other side too: a tight R-22 system that holds its charge, cools the house, and belongs to someone moving next spring can be maintained and left alone. The

Questions to ask any bidder
- Which refrigerant does the proposed equipment use, and is it the current generation?
- Are the indoor coil and air handler included, or only the outdoor unit?
- Will the line set be replaced, flushed, or left as is, and why?
- Did you run a load calculation, or copy the old tonnage from the nameplate?
- How will the old R-22 be recovered and documented?
- What electrical changes are needed, and are they in the price?
- Is the quote flat-rate and complete before the crew arrives?
