The machine is a refrigeration circuit in a box. A fan pulls air across a cold coil, moisture condenses out and runs to a drain, and the air passes over a warm coil on the way out, leaving drier and slightly warmer than it entered. Ducted versions tie into the return or supply and treat the whole house. Standalone versions sit in the space they serve. That is the whole trick, and it is the same trick your air conditioner performs as a side effect of cooling. First, the monsoon question

A homeowner in Gilbert notices the house feels sticky in August and searches for a dehumidifier. Nine times out of ten, the better answer is the air conditioner. An oversized system, or a single-stage unit in a house with a leaky envelope, cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to wring moisture out. The house hits its setpoint and stays clammy. The fix is usually a correctly sized system, longer run times or staged or variable-speed equipment that runs low and long.
