• Cabinet and base pan corrosion. Decades of monsoon rain and condensate leave the sheet metal soft, the drain pan compromised, and the roof curb connection suspect.
• Fan motors and bearings. The condenser fan on a rooftop unit lives in the hottest air in the neighborhood, and motors from that era were not designed with today's expectations.
• Electrical components. Contactors pit, capacitors weaken, and wiring insulation goes brittle after enough 155-degree afternoons inside the cabinet. These are the cheap fixes, and they are the ones that keep an old unit going another year.
• Refrigerant era. Many units of this age were built for R-22, which is no longer manufactured. Verify on the data plate. If the unit is R-22 and it needs a refrigerant repair, the economics change sharply; our refrigerant guide explains why.
• Duct connections. The supply and return plenums where the unit meets the roof are common leak points, and a unit that runs fine while cooling the attic is not a success.

Rooftop equipment ends the homeowner checklist early. Check the thermostat, the filter, and the breaker once. Then stay off the roof and make the call.

Repair vs replacement for this brand

For legacy equipment the question is rarely whether it can be repaired. A good technician can keep a lot of old iron running. The question is whether it should be, and that deserves a real answer instead of a reflex in either direction. • Minor electrical failure, unit otherwise running, refrigerant charge intact: repair it, and start planning. A contactor should not trigger a replacement.
