A ductless system is a matched set in the strictest sense. The outdoor unit and every indoor head are rated together, and the outdoor unit's capacity is shared among the heads it serves. On a multi-zone system the connected head capacity may exceed the outdoor rating within a range the manufacturer sets, because not every room needs full output at once. Replacing the outdoor unit means confirming every existing head is on the new unit's compatibility list. It usually is not. A failed multi-zone outdoor unit therefore often means replacing the heads too, which is why we scope the whole system and show you where the line falls.
Reuse is fine when the diameter matches the new unit's requirement, the run length and elevation are within spec, the copper is undamaged, and it flushes clean and holds pressure. It is not fine when the copper is kinked, was brazed poorly the first time, carried an incompatible oil, or disappears into a wall with no way to inspect it. New line sets in exposed runs are cheap insurance. New line sets through finished walls are a drywall project, a real cost driver we state up front rather than discover on installation day.
