The cooler on your roof was built for a different Phoenix
An evaporative cooler is an honest machine. A pump wets a pad, a blower pulls dry outside air through it, and the water that evaporates carries heat away with it. In April, with the humidity in the single digits, it can knock a serious number of degrees off the supply air on the electricity of a few light bulbs. Then July arrives. The dew point climbs, the monsoon parks over the Valley, and the same cooler pushes damp air into a house that is already sticky. It is not broken. It has run out of dry air to work with. Three ways this goes
Replace in kind
A new cooler goes on the same stand, over the same duct, fed by the same water line. Rigid-media cabinets last longer than aspen pads and ask less of you each spring. This is the smallest scope and the right call for a small older home with no refrigerated-air ducts, an owner who accepts a few clammy weeks, and a budget that would rather not fund a second system.Convert to refrigerated air
The cooler comes off, the roof opening is capped and flashed, and a central air conditioner or heat pump takes over. You gain a set temperature that holds through September, humidity control, and a house you can close against haboob dust. You also take on a larger electric draw during the hours APS and SRP time-of-use plans charge the most.Keep both
Some Valley homes run the cooler in spring and fall and refrigerated air through the monsoon. It works, provided a proper damper keeps wet cooler air out of the AC ducts and conditioned air from blowing out through the cooler. It is also two systems to maintain, which is the part the brochure leaves out.What changes the scope
- The roof penetration. A down-discharge cooler sits over a large hole. Capping it means removing the curb, patching decking, flashing the repair and matching the roofing, which on a foam roof is its own trade. A side-discharge cooler through a wall or window is far simpler to retire.
- Duct reuse. Cooler ducts are big, low-pressure, often uninsulated and built without a return. Refrigerated air needs a sealed supply, insulated attic runs and a real return path. Sometimes the trunk survives. Often the branches and the return air do not.
- Electrical. A cooler runs on an ordinary household circuit. A condenser needs its own circuit, a disconnect and panel capacity to spare. That is a licensed electrical task, never a homeowner one.
- Where the new equipment lives. A rooftop package unit can reuse the roof position. A split system needs a pad outside and a place for the air handler, usually a closet or a 155-degree attic.
- Sizing. Coolers were never sized with the same math as air conditioners. A load calculation on the actual house, with its west-facing glass and its insulation as found, decides tonnage. A web page cannot.
Energy and water, without the pitch
The cooler wins on electricity by a wide margin and loses on water and on humid days. Refrigerated air wins on comfort, on dust, and on predictability, and costs more to run in the afternoon peak. Neither side needs exaggeration. If you are on a fixed budget in a small home, you tolerate the monsoon, and your ducts were never meant for an air conditioner, a new cooler is a defensible choice. Do not let anyone call the swamp cooler obsolete. Call it seasonal.When not to spend the money
Pads, pumps, float valves, belts and blower motors are inexpensive wear parts. A cooler with a sound cabinet and a rotted pad needs pads. A cabinet rusted through, a warped stand, or a unit leaking onto the roof deck has finished its career. If refrigerated air already exists and the cooler is a backup nobody runs, the cheapest fix may be removing it and capping the roof before it leaks. Our

Questions to ask any bidder
- Will you perform a load calculation on my house, or size from the old cooler's rating?
- How will the roof opening be closed, and who warrants the roofing work?
- Which of my existing ducts will you keep, and how will you test them for leakage?
- Where does the return air come from in your design?
- Does my electrical panel have the capacity, and is that inspected before the bid is final?
- If I keep the cooler too, how do you isolate the two systems?
- Is the price flat-rate and fixed before work begins?
