In a builder-grade Phoenix tract home the typical AirEase package is a 4SHP heat pump outside and a matching air handler in the attic, fed by flex duct that was run as quickly as the framing schedule allowed. Heat pumps outnumber gas systems in these installations because it is cheaper for a builder to skip the gas line. Where the A97 furnace appears, it is usually paired with a 4SCU condenser and a cased coil, and it works far harder as a blower for cooling than as a heater. The safe homeowner checks are short: thermostat set to cool and below room temperature, filter not collapsed or black, breaker not tripped (reset once and no more), no ice on the lines, no oleander or storage boxes crowding the outdoor unit. If the system is icing or has started making a noise it did not make yesterday, switch it off. Do not open panels. The calculus shifts when the compressor fails, the evaporator coil has a leak that cannot be reliably repaired, or the unit is a legacy R-22 system.
