A split system is two cabinets joined by copper. Outside sits the condenser: compressor, condenser coil, fan. Inside, in an attic, a hall closet or a garage, sits the air handler or the furnace with an evaporator coil on top. The refrigerant line set runs between them; the ductwork runs from the indoor cabinet to every room. When a contractor says full split system replacement, they mean both cabinets and the coil, matched by the manufacturer as a set, plus whatever the connections require. The temptation is obvious. The compressor died, the furnace still lights, so replace the outdoor unit and leave the indoor alone. Sometimes that is right: a young indoor unit, a compatible coil already in place, a refrigerant still in production. More often it is not, for reasons that are physical rather than commercial.

The supply plenum sits on the coil; the return plenum feeds the blower. Both were built to the old cabinet's dimensions. A new unit needs new transitions, and those transitions decide whether the system is sealed or leaky for the next fifteen years. It is also the moment to look at whether the return is undersized, which it usually is in a tract home with one grille in the hallway. Return air upgrades are far cheaper with the indoor unit already out. Duct leakage and static pressure get measured at startup. If a bidder does not mention the plenums, the plenums are being ignored.

Not necessarily. An indoor unit in good condition, with a coil compatible with the new condenser and a current refrigerant, can stay. What we insist on is verifying the match rather than assuming it, and putting the reasoning in writing so you know what efficiency you are actually getting.
A condenser, evaporator coil and indoor blower that the manufacturer has tested together and rated as a combination. The efficiency figure on the sales sheet belongs to that combination, not to the outdoor unit alone. Mix parts and the number no longer applies.
Usually, but not always. Cabinets have grown, scuttle holes have not, and some attics were framed after the unit went in. We measure the opening and the path on the site visit and tell you if the access needs enlarging before we quote, not after.
If the spot has clearance and some shade, yes. If it sits eighteen inches from a block wall on the west side of the house, it deserves a conversation. Relocating a condenser adds line set and electrical work, so it is a trade-off we lay out rather than decide for you.
Not necessarily, but you need new plenum transitions, and you should know your duct leakage and static pressure before the new unit is chosen. Undersized returns are the common Phoenix tract-home problem, and fixing them is cheapest while the indoor cabinet is out.
It clears residual oil and contaminants from existing copper so the new refrigerant is not compromised. It is done only when the line set is otherwise reusable. Buried or inaccessible runs that cannot be verified are replaced instead.
No, and neither can the tonnage on your old unit. A load calculation accounts for insulation, window orientation, duct location and infiltration, all of which have changed since the house was built. Sizing is done in the house, on the evaluation visit.
