Two heat sources, one thermostat
Phoenix winter is a few weeks of cold mornings sandwiched between long stretches of weather that other states would call spring. A dual-fuel system takes that seriously. The heat pump outdoors, which is also your air conditioner, provides heat on mild days at a fraction of the energy a furnace burns. On the handful of nights that dip toward freezing, a gas furnace indoors takes over. The furnace doubles as the air handler, so the equipment count is the same as a conventional gas-and-AC split system. What changes is the outdoor unit and the brain that decides who works. Note the difference from a packaged gas-electric rooftop unit, which pairs gas heat with a cooling-only compressor and cannot heat with the compressor at all. Our

The balance point
Every heat pump loses output as the outdoor temperature falls, and every house loses heat faster as it does. The balance point is where those two lines cross, the temperature below which the heat pump can no longer keep up alone. There is also an economic balance point, the temperature below which gas heat is simply cheaper to run than the heat pump, which depends on your gas rate and your APS or SRP plan. Dual-fuel controls use an outdoor sensor, or a communicating system's own data, to switch from compressor to burner at the setpoint the installer chooses. The control also locks out the compressor while the furnace fires, because pushing hot furnace air across a running indoor coil is how you shorten a compressor's life. - Gas is already at the furnace. Replacing the outdoor AC with a heat pump and keeping a sound furnace is the smallest dual-fuel scope there is.
- The house is large or leaky. Big two-story homes with high ceilings can push a heat pump into electric strip heat on cold mornings, which is the most expensive heat in the house.
- Winter on-peak windows. Some time-of-use plans price winter mornings high. A furnace running on gas during that window sidesteps it.
- Grid resilience matters to you. A furnace needs only a little electricity to run its blower and controls.
When it does not
If there is no gas line, do not run one to justify a furnace; a modern
heat pump handles Valley winters with strip heat as a rare backup. A small single-story home with one or two occupants may see the furnace fire so seldom that you have paid for a second heating system to sit in a closet. What changes the scope
- Furnace age. A furnace with years left stays; the job becomes a heat pump, matched coil and control. If both are tired, a matched system replaces everything.
- Control compatibility. The thermostat must support dual-fuel switching, or a fossil-fuel interface kit has to be added. Communicating systems handle it natively.
- Gas line and venting. Any furnace work brings an inspection of gas piping, flue and combustion air. That is licensed work, never a homeowner check.
- Coil placement. The indoor coil sits downstream of the furnace heat exchanger. Cramped closets and attic furnaces make that fit harder.
- Electrical and line set. The heat pump's nameplate sets breaker and wire size, and existing copper is evaluated for size and cleanliness.
- Rooftop package. Dual-fuel packaged units exist for roof-mounted homes; the crane, curb and duct connection define the scope.
- Ducts. A heat pump delivers warm air, not hot, so leaky or undersized ducts show up faster in winter than they did with a furnace alone.
Questions to ask any bidder
- What balance point will you set, and how did you choose it for my rates?
- Does the thermostat you are quoting natively support dual-fuel, or is an add-on kit required?
- Is my existing furnace staying, and did you inspect the heat exchanger and venting to justify that?
- How does the control prevent the compressor and furnace from running together?
- Did you run a heating and cooling load calculation, or size from the old equipment?
- What electrical changes does the heat pump need?
- Is the price flat-rate and fixed before the crew arrives?

Whether dual-fuel is a wise replacement or an expensive habit depends on your gas rate, your electric plan, your furnace's condition and how the house holds heat on a January morning.
