A shocking bill is not an emergency the way a dead compressor is, but it is a symptom, and symptoms are cheaper to chase early. Start with the paper, then the thermostat, then the equipment.
Assuming the kWh really did climb, an air conditioner burns extra electricity for one of two reasons: it runs longer than it should, or it draws more current while it runs. Usually both.
Phoenix air is a slurry of fine dust, and every haboob paints the outdoor coil with a layer the next storm does not rinse off. A coated coil cannot reject heat. The compressor runs hotter, pressures climb, and the same cooling costs more current. This is the most common cause we find, and it is fixed with a proper cleaning, which a maintenance visit includes.
An undercharged system runs long cycles and never quite gets the house there. Capacity falls faster than power draw, so you pay nearly full price for partial cooling. The charge did not evaporate; it leaked, and the leak needs finding before any refrigerant goes in.
This one hides. Supply ducts that have pulled apart at a joint, or a return sucking in attic air, mean the system cools the attic while the house waits. In older block-and-stucco tract homes with original flex duct, losing a fifth of the airflow is not unusual. The thermostat responds by running longer. Compressors lose efficiency as they wear. Motors draw more as bearings tire. A fifteen-year-old system has drifted from the number on its label, and a house full of west-facing glass makes it work hardest in its worst hours. Pool pumps, the old second refrigerator in the garage, electric water heaters and EV chargers all spike bills, and all get blamed on the AC. The hourly graph in your utility account shows whether the load tracks the afternoon heat or something else.
Take the kWh for the billing period and divide by the number of days. Compare that daily figure with the same period last year. Then compare the average high temperature for both periods, which the utility usually prints on the bill. If usage rose sharply and the average high barely moved, the equipment has changed. If usage rose modestly and the month was five degrees hotter, the weather did it. This is the closest thing to a diagnosis a homeowner can make from a chair, and it decides whether you need a service call or a rate-plan conversation with the utility. Yes, disproportionately. A system that runs longer to reach setpoint does its extra running in the late afternoon and early evening, exactly when APS and SRP time-of-use rates peak. The same mechanical problem costs more on a time-of-use plan than on a flat plan, which is one reason to fix it early rather than ride it out.
If the coil is dirty enough to raise head pressure, yes, and in Phoenix it often is. A clean condenser coil rejects heat as designed, the compressor draws less current, and cycles shorten. We do not promise a number, because it depends on how dirty the coil was, but it is the cheapest efficiency repair on the list and the first one worth doing.
Yes. Leaky ducts do not make the house uncomfortable so much as make comfort expensive. The thermostat is still satisfied; it just takes longer runs to get there while cold air leaks into a 155-degree attic. Not on the bill alone. Replacement pays back over years, and a healthy older unit with a clean coil and correct charge may be the right thing to keep. Rarely by itself. It becomes one when the same underlying problem, such as low charge or a failing compressor, means the house cannot hold temperature on a 112-degree day and someone at risk lives there. If the bill jumped and the house is warm at the same time, treat it as a cooling failure and call the same day.
