Why is my AC short-cycling in the heat?
When your air conditioner starts kicking on and off every few minutes in the middle of a Phoenix afternoon, it is not being fussy — it is protecting itself. Here is what it is telling you, and why you should not ignore it.

You know the sound. The condenser fires up, runs for two or three minutes, clicks off. A few minutes later it starts again, runs a short while, clicks off again. Meanwhile the house never quite gets comfortable and the thermostat sits stubbornly a few degrees above where you set it. That rapid on-off pattern has a name — short-cycling — and in a Phoenix summer it is one of the most common calls we get. It is also one you should not wait on.
What short-cycling actually means
A healthy air conditioner in the heat runs in long, steady cycles — often ten to fifteen minutes or more at a stretch, sometimes nearly continuously on the worst afternoons. Short-cycling is when those runs collapse to just a few minutes before the system shuts down and restarts. It matters for two reasons. First, your home never gets properly cooled or dehumidified, because the system quits before it finishes the job. Second, and more expensive, the compressor — the priciest part you own — takes a beating. Starting a compressor is the hardest thing it does, and a unit that starts six times an hour instead of two or three is wearing out on fast-forward.1. The system is overheating and tripping a safety
This is the classic July version, and it is usually the answer. When it is 112 degrees out and your outdoor coil is packed with dust and caliche grit, the system cannot shed your home's heat. Pressure climbs, the compressor runs hotter and hotter, and a high-pressure safety switch cuts it off to prevent damage. It cools down, resets, tries again, and trips right back off — short-cycling. The fix is often as simple as a thorough condenser coil cleaning, but if it has been trapping heat for weeks, we check the compressor's health too.2. A frozen evaporator coil
It sounds backward — ice, in July — but it is common. When airflow across the indoor coil drops, the coil gets cold enough to freeze into a block of ice, and the system shuts down until it thaws, then repeats. The usual culprits are a clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil, collapsed or leaky ductwork, or low refrigerant. If you see frost on the copper lines at the outdoor unit or water pooling near the indoor unit, this is your problem. Change the filter, shut the system off to let it thaw, and if it freezes again, it needs a technician.3. Low refrigerant — which means a leak
Refrigerant does not get used up, so if you are low, the system is leaking somewhere. Low charge drops your pressures, which can cause the low-pressure switch to cycle the compressor on and off. Topping it off buys you a few weeks and solves nothing. The honest repair is to find and fix the leak, then recharge to manufacturer spec.4. An air conditioner that is simply too big
Not every short-cycle is a failure — sometimes it is a design mistake. An oversized unit cools the air near the thermostat so fast that it satisfies the setting and shuts off before a real cycle finishes. You get short runs, uneven rooms, and a house that feels cold and clammy rather than comfortable. This one usually traces back to a system that was sized by rule of thumb instead of a proper load calculation, and it is worth knowing about before you replace equipment.5. Electrical gremlins and the thermostat
A failing capacitor or contactor can make a compressor start, stumble, and drop out intermittently. So can a thermostat that sits in direct sun, above a supply vent, or is simply on its way out — it misreads the temperature, satisfies too early, and cycles the system. These are cheaper fixes than a compressor, which is exactly why you want them caught early rather than after the short-cycling has cooked something expensive.What to do right now
Two things you can safely check yourself: replace a dirty filter, and gently rinse the outdoor coil with a hose (power off first). Make sure nothing is blocking airflow around the condenser. If that does not settle it down, do not let the system keep hammering itself — every short cycle is wear you cannot get back.
