Air is moving. Cold is not.
The blower in the closet or the attic is doing its job. Air comes out of every register at the usual pressure. It is just the wrong temperature: room air, or worse, attic-warmed air that feels like a hair dryer on low. This is the warm-air complaint, and it is distinct from a system that will not run. warm-air emergency page first. Then come back here for what the repair actually involves. Warm air from a running blower means one of two things. Either the outdoor unit is not running when it should be, or it is running and failing to move heat out of the house. Those are different diagnoses, and a technician can usually tell which within a minute of standing next to the condenser.
What we measure first
The first measurement is the least technical: is the outdoor unit running, and is the fan on top spinning? From there the sequence tightens.
- Thermostat output. Does the thermostat send a cooling call on the Y wire and, on a heat pump, the correct signal on the reversing-valve wire? A thermostat set up for the wrong equipment type will run the blower and never call the compressor.
- Low-voltage continuity to the condenser. The thin wires between the house and the outdoor unit get chewed by rabbits, nicked by string trimmers and baked brittle by sun. A break here leaves the blower running alone.
- Outdoor fan amperage and rotation. A fan that is not moving air over the coil leaves the compressor with nowhere to dump heat.
- Coil condition and approach temperature. The difference between outdoor air and the refrigerant leaving the condenser tells us whether the coil is rejecting heat or insulated by a season of dust.
- Pressures with superheat and subcooling. Low charge, a restriction and a stuck reversing valve each show up as different pressure patterns.
- Line temperatures at the indoor coil. On a heat pump, warm air from the vents with the compressor running often means the system is quietly in heating mode.
Common causes, ranked
Ranked by how often they explain warm air on Phoenix service calls.
1. Outdoor fan motor failure
The most common. The compressor starts, pressure climbs with no fan to cool the coil, and a safety shuts the compressor down within minutes. The blower keeps running because nothing told it to stop. Confirmed with an amp reading and a spin test; repaired with a matched motor and, usually, a new capacitor, since the old one is often what took the motor out.
2. Dirty or blocked condenser coil
Haboob dust, cottonwood fluff and the neighbor's grass clippings pack into the fins. The fan runs, but air cannot pass through. Head pressure rises and cooling capacity drops. Confirmed by inspection and approach temperature; repaired with a proper coil cleaning from the inside out.
3. Low refrigerant charge
The compressor runs, the fan runs, and the indoor coil never gets cold enough to matter. Sometimes it ices instead. The fix is a leak repair, described in our

4. Stuck or failed reversing valve on a heat pump
A
heat pump uses a four-way valve to choose between heating and cooling. If the valve sticks or its solenoid fails, the system may deliver heat in July. Confirmed by line temperatures and pressures, and one of the larger repairs on this list.
5. Thermostat wiring or configuration
A new smart thermostat wired for a conventional AC on a heat pump, or a Y wire that slipped off its terminal, will run the blower forever and never start the compressor. A cheap fix when found, and an easy one to miss if the technician skips the thermostat and heads straight for the roof.
6. Compressor not starting
Everything else checks out, but the compressor hums, clicks and trips. That is usually a capacitor or contactor, and occasionally the compressor itself.
When this repair is worth it
A fan motor, a coil cleaning or a wiring fix is worth doing on any system that was cooling well last month. A reversing valve on a heat pump past its twelfth summer is a harder call, because the repair opens the refrigerant circuit on a system whose other components are the same age. Our

Why the diagnosis has to happen in person
Warm air has six plausible causes on this page and several less common ones off it. A web page cannot tell you whether your fan motor is dead or your reversing valve is stuck, and it certainly cannot size a replacement if the numbers lean that way.
